Clinical Data Management Overview

Clinical data management (CDM) is a part of medical data management that deals with the coding and validation of the huge amount of data generated by clinical trials that are conducted to find out the safety and efficacy of the new pharmaceutical medicines and medical devices.Clinical data management professionals are an integral part of the whole drug development process, because they manage all essential and sensitive information derived out of this clinical testing.

Job Responsibilities of Clinical Data Management Professionals

On the job, CDM professionals are involved in many areas that require expertise and skill. In a clinical trial, the clinical data professional reviews the subject data, checks the data for typographical / logical errors, or other mistakes, and then sends discrepancies back to the medical team who are performing the clinical trial in the form of data queries. They clean the data and make sure that it is accurate and ready for analysis. To carry out all of these responsibilities, clinical data professionals require a thorough understanding of medical terminology, working knowledge of clinical data management systems such as Oracle Clinical, clinical research processes, medical integrity, database management and other issues relevant to the job.

Education and Experience Required to Become a CDM Professional

While many professions use medical coding systems to assist medical industry experts, an opportunity in CDM needs more than just the understanding of medical coding. CDM professionals are required to have great data management abilities and in-depth knowledge of medical terms. Individuals searching for a job in CDM are generally required to have at minimum a bachelors’ degree in any health-related area and preferably have some training and certification in clinical data management. Some organisations hire people who have work experience in clinical trials or medical coding however work experience is not always required. Individuals presently working in any medical area can pursue a clinical data management training program to maximize the chances of getting hired.

Various Designations in Clinical Data Management

There are many designations in the clinical data management industry such as Clinical Data Associate, Clinical Data Coordinator, Clinical Data Executive, Clinical Data Analyst etc. All of them more or less perform the same functions.

Clinical Data Analyst I: For this position most companies prefer fresher’s who have gone through CDM training or any individual who has less than 1 year of work experience.

Clinical Data Analyst II: For this position companies usually will hire people who have 1 to 3 years of relevant work experience.

Clinical Data Analyst III: People with 2 to 5 years of core data management work experience are eligible for this position. The next milestone in the career after Clinical Data Analyst – III or Clinical Data Associate – III is the position of Clinical Data Manager.

Clinical Data Manager: This is a management level position for which most companies hire professionals who have 5 to 8 years of data management work experience along with leadership skills.

Associate Director / Director Clinical Data Management: For this high level management position the applicant should have 8 to 13 years or more of work experience in clinical data management along with proven management and leadership skills.
